Poster Assignment

This is my Poster that I created for our final project. I decided to create it on using RSS feeds because it is something I think I will use extensively in my future. However when I uploaded the Powerpoint poster to Slideshare, it changed the formatting of the titles of the sections, they are no longer aligned the way I would like them to be. Also the poster is appearing much darker on Slideshare. I am not sure why it did this. I will also post a copy to Blackboard once I am able to access it.

In this poster I tried to use the Gestault principles of Similarity and Continuation. I did this by using the same colors as the RSS feed logos and I used similar shapes to create a sense of unity. Also the arrows represent the continuity principle, where the eye continues to flow from one aspect to the other. I also tried to keep a central theme going with the RSS feed logos being used. Finally, I tried to chunk the information into sections so that it is easy for the audience to decifer the information.

I hope you like it...

"Taps for the Fallen Brave" by Gary Jacobsen

For my second podcast, I decided to keep with the holiday poetry theme.  This time I read a poem in honor of Veterans Day.  The poem I chose is "Taps for the Fallen Brave" written by Gary Jacobsen.  Mr Jacobsen is a veteran of the Vietnam War and writes to honor of his fellow soldiers.

Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven

For my first podcast, I decided to do a reading of the Halloween classic, The Raven bu Edgar Allen Poe. I used garage band on my Mac to create the file. I found this to be very easy and straight forward. I was able to record the stanzas in individual segments and then piece them together. I was also able to add multiple layers, which allowed me to put the sound effect of thunder in the backgroiund. This was fun to do but I hate the sound of my voice.

Author Will Richardson in Our Classroom!

Will Richardson, author of "Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and Other Powerful Tools for the Classrooms" as well as the much read Weblogg-ed has agreed to do speak to our Production of Instructional Resources I class in November.  I am disappointed I will not be able to attend that class but I did have a few questions I would like to ask Mr. Richardson:

1.  With the advent of all of these technologies that are now common place in most of our lives, there has been a whole new set of concerns that have arisen.  Many parents, teachers, and administrators are concerned that using many of the tools you talk about in your book may be exposing their children and students to dangers that "lurk" in cyberspace.  In your opinion, what is the best way to address and calm their fears and educate them on ways to make sure they, and their children are and remain safe when using these tools?

2.  What is your absolute favorite web tool to show educators how to use in the classroom?  Something that you know both the educator and the students will be excited to use and and from which they will benefit enormously?

I really hope we are able to record and post the guest appearance by Mr Richardson.

Do You See What I See? Visual LIteracy in the world around us!

All around us we see images that are instantly recognizable. Whether it is the flashing little guy on the street sign telling us when it is safe to cross the street or if it is a slighty different little guy showing us where the nearest restroom is located.  We are constantly bombarded with images that are intended to make us feel happy, or sad, excited or angry. Images that are everyone who sees them are going to think the same thing. We are trained from early on how to read graphs and charts in text books, and other resource materials. We pick up on facial expressions and body language to help us decipher how those around us are feeling. All of these can be thought of as visual texts.

What is Visual Literacy? Visual Literacy is the ability to choose and correctly use these visual texts in order to convey a meaning or intended message. It is often taken for granted how much we rely on visual literacy on a day to day basis. Whether it is reading the symbols on a map, interpreting that green usually means go where as red means stop, or a circle with a red line through it means something is not permitted, everyone recognizes the meaning instantly.  Visual literacy is all around us.  It is used in advertising, education, the workplace, the home.  Everywhere!  Think about it!

Here is a good website to get some more information on Visual Literacy:
